4-7-8 Breathing Exercise

A powerful natural way to help sleep and also get the day started

Breathing strongly influences our body and mood. We can consciously create rhythms of breathing for our body and get wonderful subconscious benefits.

Try this 4-7-8 timed breathing exercise, based on ancient Indian practice. It has great application for the many of us who struggle falling asleep at night:

1. Exhale completely through your mouth
2. Close your mouth and inhale through your nose to the count to 4 in your mind
3. Hold your breath to the count of 7
4. Exhale completely through your mouth to the count of 8
5. Repeat this cycle 4 times

That’s it! 4-7-8! Less than a minute and a half of time and you force a new state of body and mind. Try to also start your morning with the same breath pattern. Regular practice will show better results. After about a month or so of practice, try moving to 8 cycles of breath.
